I'm sure many of you have had to endure a scenario where you have some piece of shit person who comes and goes over the years, and every time you let them back into your life they seem to be a bigger piece of shit than before. It's especially insulting when you play in a band with them, help raise their kid, let them slide on some really dumb shit and then turn a blind eye when they leave you hanging because their conscience finally catches up to them after having screwed around on their girlfriend (now-wife) and he "retires" from the music business (meaning you have to look for a new member, etc) only to find out they "come out of retirement" every once in a while to feel like a rockstar again and stay relevant with a bunch of people who made fun of them in their absence to begin with. Then to add a little salt into the wound, they side with one of your most hated rivals because said rival has a band member who at one time had a promising gig and could've been "famous" instead of sticking by their longtime so-called "friend" in a time of need after himself having had plenty of bad things to say about the people he's now sucking up to. Get all that? Yeah, it's confusing, isn't it? But oh well, it happens, and I write songs about it. I almost feel sorry for people who need others' approval and acknowledgement to feel worth something. Almost. Check out my venomous approach on the subject in the song "Opportunist".
lyrics
I’m a real go-getter, don’t get no better
I get what I want, yeah I get what I want
I say what I have to, whatever I have to
Don’t need no conscience, don’t need you killing my buzz
I wanna’ belong so I can exist
I wanna’go along so I can fit
I wanna’feel big so I beg for it
I wanna’ be right in the middle cause I’m an opportunist
Yeah I’m a real winner, cause I tell me so
I follow the leader, yeah I follow the leader
Betray my friends, to make better friends
Who needs talent, just need a coat to ride
I wanna’ wanna’ wanna’ wanna’ be legit
I wanna’ be looked up to by kids
I wanna’ piece of the pie without payin’ for it
I wanna’ make sure I don’t lose out to another opportunist
Can I carry your guitar for ya’?
Would you like a beer?
Hey, aren’t you celebrity?!?!?
Will you sign my CD right here?
Can I get a picture with you?
Remember way back when?
What can you do for me?
Oh I’m so important and special now!!!
I’m a real good liar, and I aspire
To be just like you, big and famous like you
I got no shame, no I got no shame
Audacity, is my middle name
I wanna’ be a part of all of this
I wanna’ be on your guest list
I wanna’ sit in, lemme’ grab my sticks
I wanna’ party-party-party till I’m pissed
I wanna’ have another adulterous tryst
I wanna’ ‘nother ass to kiss
I wanna’ get whatever I can get, I’m an opportunist!
Heath Lane embraces the truest spirit of rock by being unafraid of speaking his mind at the risk of going against the grain.
His lyrical method is often both clever and cynical, often striking a nerve or two with subject matter, and partners with irresistible hooks and melodies executed unlike any other. You WILL have at least one song stuck in your head after listening, guaranteed!...more
